Client brief

It feels like an assignment to both parents and kids

One of the organization’s projects aims at encouraging people to develop good financial habits and mindsets at an early age. Nevertheless, the user experience of the existing app is neither intuitive nor attractive. Both parents and kids reflect that they spent extra effort on learning how to use the app. ‘Why do I need this app when I can simply give/ receive pocket money?’

Strategies

Envisioning financial management

The ultimate goal is not to allow parents to supervise children’s behaviour but reinforcing children’s financial literacy. We want a simplified & kids-oriented personal banking app that empowers kids to manage their own money just like in the real life.

Painpoint

  • The existing app doesn’t provide intellectual value to young users. They didn’t get insight or feedback when they made progress or completed a task.

Process

  • I applied gamification throughout the app to engage young users in the journey. The use of mascots and prompt advice are polished to make the app more informational and friendly.

Key result

  • Create saving goals and keep track of the progress with gamified visualization. It helps to nourish children’s vision of financial management.

Paintpoint

  • The UI is not self-explanatory. Parents get lost easily when they switch between multiple kids’ profiles. This was the largest holdback - they end up using physical rewards instead.

Process

  • I consolidated the data structure without taking away any features. To better enforce kids to manage money on their own, I proposed to separate parents’ and kids’ accounts. On the other hand, parents can still link and manage kids’ profiles, view their activities, and create chores for them.

Key result

  • Through the revamped experience, parents can view kids’ profiles, and saving and spending analytics all in one place without switching accounts. These help to reduce friction and retain users.

They can also educate their children to earn their own money by rewarding them for completing assigned chores.

Key takeaways

Consider external transfer

In this MVP scope, only one parent account is able to manage a kid’s profile. That means if parents want to manage their kids together, they will have to share one account. While the technical feasibility is still waiting to discuss, we wish to enable parents to co-manage kids’ profile in the future.

Co-supervising

The current design focuses on transferring between parents and kids, which doesn’t consider much external transfer. In the future, we wish to ensure the experience is seamless when we include further requirements, such as inter-bank transfers and adding new recipients.
